A self-drive trip gives you control over the journey, while a chauffeured package shifts driving and much of the coordination to the operator. The better choice depends on your group's confidence, schedule and appetite for daily logistics.
Think about who gets to relax
On a self-drive holiday, one person may spend much of the day watching the road, finding parking and managing navigation. That can work well if driving is part of the enjoyment. If everyone wants to focus on the visits, compare a private vehicle arrangement. Clarify the driver's working hours, overnight arrangements and what happens when sightseeing runs late.
Keep flexibility specific
A private vehicle does not mean unlimited route changes. Likewise, self-drive freedom does not remove ticket slots, parking restrictions or access rules. Write down the changes you might reasonably want, such as a longer lunch stop or an earlier hotel return. Ask which changes are included and which would affect distance, driver duty or the next day's bookings.
Before you book
- Identify who will drive each day
- Check parking and luggage needs
- Agree how route changes are charged
A common question
Does a private package include a sightseeing guide?
Not necessarily. A driver, local guide and tour escort are different services. Ask which role is included and whether specialist guiding is available at the places where you would find it useful.
